Chapter Eleven

Dusty

When I woke again, my body protested, especially my head. I slowly blinked my one good eye open when I heard nothing and no one around me, only to close it again and whimper at the reminder of what those men did to me. Their hands I would never forget. Maybe it was wrong of me to pray that they’d get their just desserts, but I did anyway.

Reaching up, I gently ran my fingers over my swollen face and winced each time I touched a sensitive spot. There were many.

Opening my eye again, I blinked slowly as I looked at my hand and pulled the other one up to study them. They were unbound, but bruises and cuts covered them. A tingle of relief rolled through me at the thought of having them free. Sighing, I dropped them and squinted. I was in a different room from before. A bedroom. Perhaps it was a different place entirely. A single bed with ratty sheets and a bucket beside it filled the space. I didn’t know how long I’d been unconscious, but when I glanced to the window, sunlight shone from between the gaps in the blinds. Groaning, I stood slowly from the floor. My back pinched and ached with every move.

They could have put me on the damn bed.

My head spun, and the room tilted. I gripped the end of the bed and waited for it to stop. My stomach churned at the thought of those men over me, and I gagged, but nothing came up.

A sob caught in my throat. I wanted to curl into a ball, but I couldn’t. I had to do something instead of wallowing. I had to escape.

When my head settled enough, I took some unsteady steps toward the window. I looked down at my body. Seeing my tee split down the middle, I gagged again. My jeans were still undone as well. My throat closed as a stone of anguish filled it. With a cry, I gripped my tee and tried to pull it around to cover my chest, but my hands fumbled, and I kept losing the torn pieces. A tight-lipped wail escaped me, and I tugged the tee from my body, threw it to the ground, and glared at it.

Shaking my head, I sniffed and finished my slow walk to the window. I pulled the blind back, and the sunlight stabbed at my eye. I flinched away and took a step back. Raising my hand, I protected my eye from the light and glanced under the shade of my hand. A mewl fell from my lips when I saw the bars on the outside.

No. I wouldn’t break down. I wouldn’t give in.

Turning, I moved to the door, but of course it was locked. I pressed my ear against the solid wood, wincing when more pain sliced through my face. Still, I didn’t move, needing to know if anyone was out there.

Nothing moved or shifted outside the room.

But then my heart gave a hard thump when I heard a door slam.
